As part of an earlier project (102019), researchers investigated a wide variety of zoonoses associated with urban smallholder dairy production in Dagoretti, Nairobi. The project findings indicated that the two priority concerns were aflotoxins and Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium is an important enteric pathogen that causes diarrhea in humans and animals. Young children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are most susceptible. This project will endeavor to understand the transmission of Cryptosporidium by analyzing infection rates in animals over time, investigating pathways of human exposure (manure, water, soil and crops), and comparing infection levels in households with and without cattle. The Cryptosporidium team will also collaborate with teams working on tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS to ensure that risks related to co-morbidity or differential diagnosis are adequately addressed. Decision-makers, farmers and communities will take part in disseminating the research findings, and devising and implementing mitigation measures. Aflatoxins will be dealt with in another project.
